5 things Friday

My brain is frizzled, my body is tired and I am just HAPPY it is FRIDAY!!! On days like today lists are my Bloggy buddy!!

1. Have you Entered to WIN $100 off Brooks Shoes at Onlineshoes.com? If not click HERE. Giveaway ends on 7/18!!
2. Live in the Seattle area and want to attend a New Balance Minimus event hosted by Onlineshoes.com??

Date: Thursday, July 21, 2011
Time: 1:00 – 3:00
Location: South end of Green Lake, off West Green Lake Way N.

Let’s get together! If you were ever the least bit curious about barefoot running or the whole minimalist running movement, then mark your calendars for July 21st. We’ll be hosting a fun little Minimus Meetup at Green Lake, one of Seattle’s favorite running parks, and we’d love to see you there!

This Minimus Meetup won’t be all fun and games, though—we’ll also have prizes and giveaways. You could even star in a video review of the Minimus if you like. So, if you live in or around Seattle, come on out to Green Lake on July 21st and let us show you how New Balance is changing the way you run.

3. I can't wait to see the new Harry Potter Movie!! Not sure when we will fit it in, but WOW am I excited. I have been watching Harry Potter Marathons off and on to prepare for the Wizarding fun.

4. I read a book!! Rare I know. I was sent Running on Empty to review ages ago. I started reading it on the airplane to and from Boston, lost it on a shelf for 2 months, then Finished this week.

My thoughts? To be fully honest I could not relate to Marshall, he suffered a great loss and was able to push through and accomplish amazing things...but he did it at the expense of his children which just made me SAD!! The book is well written and inspiring worth reading.
When I finished Running on Empty I opened The Long Run. I am HOOKED!! I will have a full report in a few weeks, this is a cant put down type of story. WOW oh WOW!

5. See Jane Run Half Marathon and 5K is this weekend!!!
This time I will be side by side with my Sister, not cheating and crossing the Finish Line twice.
This will be my 7th Half Marathon!! And the 3rd time that I am Running to help someone Finish. I do not have time to list all of the lovely ladies and bloggers who will be racing, but I will say GOOD LUCK!!

  • I do want to say a SPECIAL GOOD LUCK To Chelsea HERE. Chelsea told me last year at You Go Girl that she wanted to run her first Half Marathon and wanted me to Coach her. I felt honored and a bit nervous. Chelsea has been wonderful to coach, dedicated, excited and awesome at keeping me up to date on her training. I am glad that I was able to coach her because we have grown closer as friends through the process. She is now a cherished friend, and super cheerleader. Her injury threw a curve ball in our plans, but I think See Jane will be a GREAT First Half Marathon Finish line for her. And with the pacing power of Kerrie HERE, they are bound to have a BLAST!!
Many of us plan to meet at the expo around 5:00PM tomorrow with a Dinner Following. I would love to plan for a pre-race photo-op but I don't know the area!! Will update the Blog with a time and location once I figure it out. Anyone have ideas of a good meeting spot and time?

Running with my Sister has been amazing, we are making memories to last a lifetime. We Finally found the perfect Tank Tops and I am designing something to put on the front, probably just safety pin, thanks for all the ideas!!! Muscle Man and Chelsea's Man will be on the course to take pictures, so be prepared for photos on Monday!!

This weekend is going to be STELLAR!! Tall Sisters on the Run!!

  • What do you have planned this weekend?

  • Read any good Running books lately?

  • Are you going to see Harry Potter?

  • Leave a comment and let me know that you are still there :)

Sisters on the Run

On Sunday Tall Sister and I set out for our last longer run before her first Half Marathon!! She worked most of the morning so we were not able to run until about 6:30PM. The trail is MUCH different at 6:30PM, the crowd, the bugs, the dogs...etc..

Muscle Man started out with us pushing the Little Studs but he is still nursing a ITB injury and stopped just before the first mile to play at the river. We continued on a muggy night, chatting as the miles passed. We are doing a walk/run 5 minute run and 30 second walk, this has worked well for Tall Sister as she builds her endurance. It is CRAZY because my legs are more sore from this walk/running than from speedwork, using different muscles I guess.

Funny we got hit on by a tattoo covered guy under a bridge smoking, that is a first :) We completed a 10K to save energy for the race. And I forgot my camera but never posted the photo from our 9 miler.
And just look at the Mountain!!! We have been working on MATCHING OUTFITS, which Tall Grandma thinks is funny because she would dress us alike when we were little. The last few pieces will come together but so far I know we are wearing.. PINK SPARKLE SKIRT over black capris, since Tall Sister trained in black capris I thought this would be best. Special thanks to my Hood to Coast Teammates at Team Sparkle!! Check out the fun skirts HERE.
Brooks Switch 4 shoes HERE. These shoes are light weight, adorable colors and perfect for the Half Marathon Distance. Did you know that Brooks is having a SALE?!?!?!?! Women go HERE and Men go HERE. Or if you want to try to win $100 toward Brooks shoes enter my

*****Giveaway HERE now until July 18th.

I feel truly blessed to be able to coach my Sister to the Finish Line of her First Half Marathon, Sunday is going to be a GREAT day!!

Black Diamond Miner's Day 5K

7-9-2011 was the First Annual Miner's Day 5K in tiny Black Diamond Washington. I found out about this race through my buddy and fellow RRCA Coach Erika. Her WONDERFUL sister was the Race Director. I tried to promote the race so the T-shirt had my Blog name on it, which was GREAT! I was also given Bib #1!!

We had a little difficulty finding the start area, but were soon set...Me Pre-race in my Running Skirt and Brooks Green Silence Shoes and FAVORITE Run Happy Hat.
There was a skate park which the boys used as slides, they were pretty cute, running and sliding.
Soon we settled in for pre-race announcements. I looked around... Hmmmmm lots of fast looking guys but not too many ladies..34 people total. OK then, guess I will try to keep up with the guys. I did a Half mile warm-up, felt silly running too much with such a small field.
That photos cracks me up!! What am I doing, the guy just in front of me is FAST, he won.
And off we go, see the guy in the grass green shirt? He and I took 1st and 2nd in a small race in 2009 it was fun to see him again, he is SPEEDY!
Love the strides..

Mile 1= 6:41
This mile was GREAT! I held back so I would not burn out, for once I wanted to race smart and save some for the end of the race. Most of the mile was downhill and through a neighborhood. I felt strong and was kicking it with the big boys. My stride was fluid.

Mile 2= 7:33
This was on a gravel trail with little hills. I had a hard time finding my footing and my knee started to BURN. I am not used to uneven surfaces and my lack of shock absorbers, 2 knee surgeries on my left knee, makes for a painful run. I passed a young male runner in a yellow shirt on the uphill, my Green shirt buddy was just in front. The path went through wetland areas which was very pretty!! On the return I saw the 2nd place female, I smiled and said "Good Job." There was a girl who looked maybe 13, she had taken off her racing shirt, probably got too hot. She was ADORABLE and did really well.

Mile 3= 8:25
Out of the gravel and the HILLS that had helped me early on were coming back to haunt me. My legs were toast and I could feel the lactic acid building. I realized my STOOOPID shoe was untied, Rookie mistake! I stopped to tie it and got passed by 2 people. UGH!! Back UP UP UP.. Ouch, I do not like hills!! It was a relief to make it to the top but I had lost precious time. I was SLOW and pretty mad at myself.

We took a right and ran down down down a steep hill, hmmmm, pretty sure this means that there is a KILLER hill on the other side. Zoomed around and there is was, the LEG TRASHER HILL. .2 left and a HILL! I tried to get my legs to work but they were done. Sprinting up hills is not fun, good for me, but not fun. I could hear clapping and knew I was close. Turned the corner and could see the Finish. I knew Muscle Man and the Little Studs would be waiting, and taking pictures. I tried to look strong, but I was TOAST!!
#1 coming down the last stretch.
CLASSIC Tall Mom, mouth wide open, hair bouncing, T-Rex arms, and a clown?? AWESOMELY bad picture.. makes me laugh!! FYI I will be doing some arm work after seeing this photo, wow have I lost muscle.
And to the Finish where I was greeted by the amazing Race Director. I told her that the course was TOUGH and HILLY, she said she meant to run it before, I told her she should do it to see, wowzers!!

1st Place Female at 22:50 7:20ish pace
11th Overall

The boys wanted Balloons and I could not resist posing with a Clown, only in Black Diamond.
What a TREAT to have the Boys there, they were really good for Daddy.
My awesome Muscle Man hubby, this will be 2 weeks in a row as I have recruited him to drive and take Pictures for See Jane Run Half Marathon this coming weekend. Love you honey!!
One TREASURE was the amazing day and seeing Mount Rainier in the background. There were fun booths, a chili cook-off and trains that the boys explored. AWESOME! All in all a GREAT day! Yes I struggled, yes I feel less than stellar on hills and speed, but a Wins a win!!

  • How was your weekend?

  • Remind me again, who is running See Jane Seattle??

Anatomy of the Tall Mom 5K

In preparation for the Black Diamonds 1st Annual Miner's Day 5K tomorrow I was looking through my old 5K Race Reports. First off I realized that as of today I have run 6 5K's, 6 Half Marathon and 6 Marathons.. Hmmmmm...

Tall Mom 5K Racing Truths:

1. I always go out way to fast

2. Going out way too fast means that I will fade about mid-race

3. I never have kicking speed at the end and come across the line looking like I am about to DIE, T-Rex arms in full force.

Tall Mom 5K History
Santa Runs Tacoma 12/2010
Report HERE
Ran for fun to cross the line and take photos of my buddies
23:07- 4th Place in my AG
Enumclaw 5K 7/2010
Report HERE
This was my A race I felt GREAT and ready to PR. Trouble was I did not realize that the course was part dirt/gravel/grass and I wore the wrong shoes. I also set out way too fast and faded.
PR- 21:38 (6:58 pace)- 3rd in my AG
Kent 5K with Muscle Man 7/2010
Report HERE
Ran with Muscle Man at his pace, he Duded me at the end :)
26:29- AMAZINGLY 4th in my AG
Run Wild 5K 9/2009
Report HERE
It was a rainy day but I felt great, was chasing down the leader but did not have the speed.
21:54- 2nd Overall Female, 1st AG
ERHS 5k- 9/2009
Report HERE
This was my debut as a "fast" runner, very small race to raise money for the high school cross-country team. I felt great, some hills and weird terrain messed with me, it was weird to be in Second place the whole race.
22:56- 2nd Overall in the race, 1st Female
Race for the Cure 5K 6/2008
First race as an adult. Baby #2 was 5 months old, I struggled to keep running. My co-worker stayed with me and helped me get through the tough parts. My goal was sub 30 minutes.

There you have it....my 5K's all tied up in a pretty bow :)

Plan for tomorrow:

1. Warm-up Run- Thanks Marlene HERE for this tip.

2. Do not go out too fast! Run by feel.

3. Based on my current fitness level I think I can hold 7:15ish pace for a 22:31 Finish. Thanks to Cool Running pace calculator HERE I use this tool often!!

4. DO NOT T-REX across the Finish Line

5. Have Fun!!

  • Tell me about your BEST 5K Race. What did you do during the race that really helped you Finish Strong?
